Autocross This Sunday

Our next autocross is this Sunday at the usual time and place - The Ohio Historical Society near I 71 and 17th Avenue.

Steve Johnson has been our course designed for the past year, and we have had some nice, fast courses, but we have a new course designer this time. I think we just might have a slalom this time.

Dublin July 4th Parade

Dublin's 2008 Independence Day Parade is almost here - it's this Friday, July 4th!!

Please join us to decorate our cars and drive them in the parade. The weather looks very good, much cooler than normal for this time of year. We have a great position toward the front of the parade so we should get off on time and wrap up in just in time for lunch.

After the parade, we plan to continue driving up Dublin Road to Hilliard for lunch at Cheese Burger in Paradise (I-270 and Hilliard/Cemetery Road).

We had a really good time last year with over 11 cars representing the club. This year we expect about 20 cars! It should be a great time!

Meet us at the Dublin Metro North Office Complex Friday by 10AM. We are in Lot One, Purple Lot, Parade Staging Position #24 "Buckeye Miata Club".

If you get lost or need directions please call me Chuck Avery at home (614) 764-8530 or on my Cell Phone (866) 265-6869. If you call my cell, wait while it connects as it has a short delay.

It is not required but if you can call me in advance of Friday to let me know that you will be joining us, That would be fantastic!

Parade Line Up Locations - You will notice colored flags on the Metro lot when you are getting into your position. The color of your parade position will match the colored flag in the lot to which you will be located. (All float entries will line up on the RIGHT side of Metro N.

by a sign with participant’s names). Please see the Key on the attached map for your location and lot.

Parade Start Time - Once the Parade begins at 11:00 a.m., please be in your cars/ group and ready to go.

Pacing - In order to keep a steady pace during the parade, please be aware of the gap with the participant in front of you. (Don't let the gaps get too large).

Parade Handouts - Please remember to give handouts to spectators "hand to hand". No throwing of any kind is permitted. If you are caught throwing candy by a Parade Marshal, you may not be allowed to enter future parades.

Dump of the Month - June 24

Bud McClees refers to the Tilton Hilton as being the Dump of year and we have selected a location in Columbus that may rival the Tilton Hilton. Some of you who attended the Ohio State University may be familiar with this dump as it fits the requirements of a dump.

It is the Blue Danube Restaurant. The restaurant is located at 2439 North High Street and parking is available just north of the restaurant and there are signs for that parking.

We plan to meet at 6:30 on Tuesday, June 24th and would like to know approximately how many people plan to attend. Please call or email us.

Autocross This Sunday

This Sunday (June15th) is our next autocross.

A word of caution - according to Tuesday's Columbus Dispatch, the exits to 17th Avenue from I-71 are closed. The ramps are open, but used as through lanes and barriers will be set up making it impossible to exit onto 17th Avenue. The closest exits are Hudson Street to the North, and 5th Avenue on the South. Take those exits, go west to 4th Street, then turn north or south to 17th Avenue. Then go East to the usual entry to the Historical Society.

As you may know, our rent for the Historical Society's parking lot increased. Though the increase was reduced somewhat by Steve Johnson (aka the negotiator) we are forced to increase our entry fee by $5. This puts us in-line with the fee SCCA charges for their events when you register the day of the autocross. And, we get many more runs.

> As an aside, to help balance our budget, we will once again rent our cones to the Cobra Club for their autocross on 6/22 at Cooper Field. As an aside, they are paying about 2 1/2 times the price for the Cooper Field parking lot compared to the rent we pay the Historical Society.

Autocross Update - #1

Unlike those NASCAR wimps, the weather doesn't keep us from autocrossing.

We did have our first autocross on Sunday. It was drizzling and 50 degrees at the 8:00 set up time and the weather hardly changed all day except for the tornados. Sirens were going off, and the PA system at the Historical Society said to seek shelter. But we continued to run. We watched the dark clouds get close, but the tornado and darkest clouds stayed west and then curled around to the north of us. There was thunder and the lightning did cause concern. But, we had a plan, if the lightning intensified or if we saw a tornado - RUN. Not far away is a concrete bridge leading into the Historical Society's main building under which would have been our shelter.

There were periods of no rain, but there was standing water somewhere on the course the entire day. Several drivers even dropped their tops when the rain slowed and the few times it did stop. Eleven people drove, including two that will be new members. It's a grandfather/grandson team that will join the club so the grandfather can introduce the grandson to autocrossing. By the way, they drove a 1991 BRG that is in perfect shape.
The grandfather also owns a pair of Alfa Romeos.

Normally it's the first few autocrosses that build our treasury to carry us through the lesser attended, end of the season events. Last year we had 27 drivers for our first event on May 6th we about broke even for the entire season. And, that's before the rent increase for the lot, Obviously, with just 11 drivers last Sunday we lost money. Our current autocross entry fee
equals the "pay in advance" SCCA charge. We will probably need to raise it to the SCCA "pay at registration" fee of $30 for members, and $35 for non members for the June 15th event. A final decision will be made before theend of the month. I am sure you will let me know your thoughts about this change at the Johnson's Indy Party on May 25th. See you there.

First Autocross May 11

Everything is the same as last year. It will be at the Ohio Historical
Society. It's located at 17th Avenue and Interstate 71 - just north of

The National Weather Service predicts the temperature will hit 69 degrees,
and there is a 30% chance of rain. But don't worry, just like Formula 1,

A Sports Car Driving Tour

Riverrun is a 300+ mile, all-day driving tour using some of Ohio’s most interesting and challenging roads. This year we’ll go southeast through the Hocking Hills to Pomeroy. After a meal at a local diner or a picnic on the riverbank (recommended), we’ll drive northeast along the Ohio River to the historic riverfront village of Little Hocking. There we’ll pick up the ever popular SR 555 to Zanesville and Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl.

Cars leave the Bob Evans at US 33 and Gender Road, near Canal Winchester, between 8 and 9 am. We should be at the Ohio River around noon and finish by 6 pm., depending on the time spent sightseeing. There is no fixed schedule nor any assigned speeds. This is a tour rather than a rally.

The Central Ohio British Car Club Council invites all driving enthusiasts, regardless of vehicle make, model or type, to join us on Riverrun 2008.

A Tour of Licking County
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Hi everyone,

This Saturday we will hold the BMC Spring Rally! This will take place over some of the roads of Licking County. Here are the details:

When: Saturday, May 3rd – start gathering between 9:00-9:30am. Driver's/navigator's meeting at 9:30am, first car out at 9:45am. Rain or shine!

Where: Kroger's in Pataskala - 350 E. Broad Street (route 16), about ½ mile east of route 310 north. Meet in the parking lot between the Kroger's gas station and Kroger's (near the bank).

Cost: $10 per car. This will cover prizes (yes, PRIZES!) and rally costs. Any leftover profits will go to the Ronald McDonald House.

This will be a FUN rally! Just follow our directions, don't exceed the speed limits, try to find the clues, and have a great time. The winner(s) will be the team with the most correct answers. In the event of a tie, we'll check to see who took the least time to complete the rally. Yes, there will be a couple of stops available along the route for bathroom breaks and snacks and drinks. We'll gather at a restaurant at the end of the event to go over answers and award prizes.

For a head count, please let us know if you're coming, but it's not required. Either e-mail us or give us a call. Hope to see you there!

Miata World II - Dallas, TX, May 2009

Here is some "heads up" information sourced from the San Diego Miata Club regarding next year's MX-5 Miata 20th Birthday Bash in Dallas, Texas during May 21-26, 2009:

• May 21-26, 2009 - That is Thursday through Tuesday. Although that
is the date range given, I strongly suspect that the main event will
actually be a Friday-Monday type of thing. We'll see.
• Gaylord Texan in Grapevine is the Host Hotel - Rooms will be $139
per night plus fees and taxes.
• $300 per person (early registration price)
• Oval, road course, and autocross track events at Texas Motor Speedway
• There will be an MX-5 Cup race, probably Sunday
• 30,000 square feet of exhibit hall for vendors and socializing
• Welcome reception, group dining, and banquet
• Car give-away
• Goody bags!
• Rallyes, funcanna, and other events are still in the works...

The event website is expected to go live on May 21, 2008. There will
be links from the event website to the hotel. You will be required to
register on-line in order to get the codes needed for the hotel's
discounted rate.

BTW, the year and model of the car to be given away remains a secret.
All we know is that it is something exciting. Personally, I'm betting
that it will be one of the first MazdaSpeed NCs. But that is just a
guess on my part!

I'll post more information as it becomes available.

At $300 per person for event registration and $139+ per night hotel costs, this is not going to be an inexpensive event to attend! Hopefully, when the event organizers get all the venues and activities laid out, it will be worth it.

THE FIRST AUTOCROSS THIS YEAR - MAY 11

The autocross season is about to begin!

Our venue, The Ohio Historical Society, is becoming THE place for weddings and private parties. Good news for them - bad news for us. We get a reduced rental fee for the lot because we set our dates around their schedule. As a result, it was difficult for us to get all of our choice dates. If you have not yet checked, the dates are on the club's web site.

Our first autocross is May 11th - Mother's day. Think of this as her day to be free from you. Come out to the autocross and give her a day of peace and quite.

We need some one to tow the autocross trailer on this Sunday. And, for the entire season.......If you tow the trailer you can auto cross for free. The trailer is in the same spot as last year - Byers Mazda near Sawmill and I270.

Mason racing at Mid-Ohio May 31 - June 1

Many of you have enjoyed hearing about Mason's racing exploits from his presentations to the club last year. Here's an opportunity to see him in action at Mid-Ohio this year! The details are in the email below.

"Spectators" aren't allowed at the race, but you can easily be added to his "crew" list. That just means you check in at the registration shack, give them the driver's name and pay the $10 crew entry fee. Once inside, you have access to just about everywhere except the pit lane.

If you're interested in going, simply shoot me an email. I'll gather the responses and send them along to Mason. Maybe we can meet somewhere and drive up together. There will be a number of other races that weekend, so there'll be plenty to do.

This year we will have only one national race at Mid-Ohio. It will take place on May 31 - June 1. Although I do not have a hard schedule at this time, I am sure that practice and qualifying will occur on Saturday with the race on Sunday. Outside of my race there will be several other race groups including a large contingent of Spec Miatas. Any and all are welcome to attend the race. I can add everyone's name to my crew list ($10 entry charge to SCCA) or if a large group would like to attend I will work with the race organizers to set something up.

April DOTM - PARKING UPDATE

To all April Dump attendees,

Yesterday Brenda noticed that Columbus Street, the street that I directed you to in order to get to the public parking lot for the Wigwam Restaurant, is now closed for construction. It figures!

You can still get to the public parking lot - here's how -

If you have no luck finding a parking spot on High Street, you'll need to turn around and head back to the traffic light at Waterloo Street. Turn left, and proceed to Washington Street and turn left (it will be the first street on the left). You will then need to turn left at the first opportunity - this is unmarked, but you will see the public parking ahead of you.

Or, you can go forget looking for parking on High Street and go directly to the public parking lot -
As you come south on High Street from route 33, follow the detour signs at Waterloo Street (turn right at the light), and go to Washington Street (turn left) then turn left at the first opportunity and proceed to the parking lot.

April Dump of the Month - Wigwam, April 9th, 6:00PM

Hi everyone,

This month's Dump will be held at the Wigwam Restaurant in downtown Canal Winchester. We will meet between 6-6:30pm on this coming Wednesday, April 9th.

The Wigwam features simple down-home cooking for reasonable prices with great, friendly service!

To get there (this is on the southeast side, outside of I-270) - take I-270 to US-33 towards Lancaster. Follow 33 PAST the Gender Road overpass, then watch for the sign for High Street (this is NOT the same as Columbus's High Street!). Turn right on High Street (across from the Speedway station), and follow it across the railroad tracks to the first traffic light at Waterloo. You'll see the the Wigwam restaurant over near the far right corner.

Parking - try to grab a parking spot out front on either High or Waterloo. If you can't find one, drive
south on High, then make a right on Columbus Street, and another right in the first alley. This will take you to a public parking lot behind the restaurant.

RSVP's are always welcome (but not binding) - nice for a head count, anyway.

The updated 2008 BMC Event Schedule is now posted on our website! Please remember that all dates are tentative and are subject to change. :O)

If you have an event on the schedule, please review the date and confirm it for me if you can. I took some liberties with the dates of a few events, so make sure that works for you! Also, some events are still marked TBD and will remain so until someone volunteers to host the event or sets a date.

Thanks for your help in making 2008 a great year for the club! While there are plenty of things on the schedule, there's ALWAYS room for more! If you'd like to add an event to the schedule, simply contact me to work out a date and get it announced.

By the way, there is room for more drives on the schedule, especially in June, July and August. They don't have to be on a weekend, we can get together for a short drive during the week. It stays light plenty late during those months!

Perhaps you'd like to organize a short drive to a restaurant, ice cream or someplace interesting some evening? Simply establish a start point, a time to leave and get a note to myself or Amy so that it gets announced to the club.

The hosting company moved the web site to a new platform over the weekend. There are some issues to be fixed that will require that I delete the web site and then restore it from a local copy. Are you a basketball fan??

Does anyone want to see the Cavaliers in Cleveland with me this Sunday? The
person I was going to got with had a last minute problem, and no one else
can make a final decision yet. So at this time, I have an extra seat
available.

These are the Key Private Bank Court Club seats, are not advertised in the
Cav's web site, are directly behind the Cavaliers bench and have a face
value of $375. Jack Nicholson's Lakers seats are not any better. You can't
get any closer. The ticket comes with a free buffet with open bar an hour
before tip off and the same for an hour after the game.

Tip off is 6:00, so we would need to leave Columbus around 2:30. You drive,
I ride. Your ticket is free.

There is a new Miata magazine out called "Forever MX5".

I believe it is produced by the same folks who did the "Miata Magazine" that was discontinued a few years ago. I received Issue 1- Spring 2008 recently. It has a nice mix of maintenance/restoration/modification projects, travel ideas, racing stuff, and ads etc. I have never seen a copy of the discontinued "Miata Magazine" so I can't compare the two.

The magazine is published 4 times a year and the subscription rate is $19.99 per year.

We're planning a "Night At The Races" on September 6th.

It is Scioto Downs Big Night. Eight races are $100,000,00 Championship events. We should have our reservations in by the 5th of April. That is after the April monthly meeting at Byers.

James K. "Jim" Langley 1930-2008

LANGLEY James K. "Jim" Langley, age 77, of West Jefferson, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, in his residence. He was born November 10, 1930, in Pikeville, Ky., the son of John and Mandy Langley. Jim was a retired carpenter, a member of the Harvest Chapel Church of Christ in Christian Union, the Buckeye Miata Club, Central Ohio Anglers and Hunters Club, was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the West Jefferson American Legion Post #201. Survivors include daughter, Pam Langley; son, Scott (Judy) Langley, all of West Jefferson; 3 grandchildren, Dreama, Sharon and Amanda; great-grandson, Michael; brother, John Langley of Ironton; sister, Annis Flichman of Waterloo. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Ida Mae Langley. Family and friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday in the RADER-McDONALD FUNERAL HOME, West Jefferson, where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Paul Burgett officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Honors will be held in Hampton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Hospital Home Health and Hospice, Rejoice & Remember, 210 North Main St., London, Oh. 43140. Update on my Dad

It is with great sadness that I tell you of the passing of my Dad yesterday. I am very relieved that his suffering has ended, but we will miss him greatly! He fought a good fight and I couldn't be prouder to call him my Dad!

There will be a viewing at Rader-McDonald in W. Jefferson on Rt.40 (Main St) about a mile west of town on Thursday from 5-8pm. The service will be on Friday at 11am, same location.

Buckeye Bullet Driver to Speak Thursday Night

Hi everybody,

Roger Schroer, driver of the world's fastest hydrogen powered vehicle, Ohio State's Buckeye Bullet 2, will bring us up to date on last year's speed trials at Bonneville and this year's attempt to break Buckeye Bullet 1's 315 MPH electric land speed record.

Roger is the 60th all-time member of the Bonneville 300 MPH Club and lead driver training instructor at TRC in East Liberty, OH. He holds both the BNI-sanctioned U.S. and FIA-sanctioned world speed records in BB2. He topped out Buckeye Bullet 1 at 321 MPH on the Bonneville Salt Flats in )ct0ber 2004.

Roger will be joining us for dinner after the meeting so you will have a chance to talk with him then.

NEEDED - Fog Light for 2000 SE

I had a fog light not working on my 2000 SE Miata and when I tore into it I need more than just a bulb. For some reason it had a melt down so I need a whole new light.I don't need the mounting bracket just the light assembly. Mazda says I have to order the whole fog light kit.

The Annual BMC Game Night - March 1

The annual BMC game night will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Nieman's. The gathering begins at 6:30 p.m. with the games starting at 7:15 p.m. Bring a snack or dessert to share and the drink of your choice.

There is a $3.00 fee for each participate. (This fee covers the cost of prizes.)

What is game night? Each person is paired with another participate. Usually, there are five different games. Each team plays each game for 15 minutes and accumulate as many points as possible. There are 15 minute breaks between each game. The games are easy and fun. At the end of the evening the scores are tallied and the winners receive "wonderful" prizes.

To participate in game night it is very important that you just want to have a good time and want to laugh (a lot). No skill is necessary.

To RSVP, please call either Jane or Jerry Nieman. It is very important to let us know if you will be coming. To set up the games and the schedule for each team, it is necessary for us to have an accurate count.

If you have never done this event, give it a try. It is a good time and a great way to meet other BMC members.

Early Television Museum tour - Feb 23

A BMC tour of the Early Television Museum (check out: www.earlytelevision.org ) has been planned for Saturday, February 23. There no admission charge to the museum, however they encourage donations to help keep the lights on. The tour will be followed by lunch at a restaurant suggested by Sue Parsons.

The plan;

The Early Television Museum is located in Hilliard at 5396 Franklin St. which is NW of Main St. north of Cemetery Rd.

Time: The tour will begin at 10:30 am. Plan to meet at the museum.

Duration: The length of time we spend at at the museum will depend on the groups interest. When interest wanes we will head for lunch.

Lunch at the Cook Shack BBQ , 4093 Trueman Blvd., east of I 270 and north of Cemetery Rd near a Home Depot.

Over 60,000 people have toured the building in the last four years after the Ohio Supreme Court moved in in 2004. We are very proud that you were among them.

The lives of 11.6 million Ohioans are affected by Ohio Supreme Court decisions that are made where you stood on Saturday. We hope that you came away with a better understanding of how the Ohio judicial system works and that it is very important to elect good judges as well as good legislators and governors.

It will be held at the Aladdin Shrine Temple on Friday, February 15. Tickets are $28.00 and we have a group from our club who will be sitting together at the concert. We would like to have more.
Mike Albert is the premier Elvis impersonator in the country and his show is something to remember.

Sign up for 2008 Dumps of the Month!

The BMC Dump of the Month has been a very popular series of events over the past two years. I'm sure we'd all like to see it continue through 2008!

That said, here's your opportunity to pick a month and sign up to share one of your favorite "dump" restaurants with the club. For now, I'd like to simply have someone signed up to do at least one DoTM a month for the rest of the year.

Here are some basic ground rules:

1. We can have more than one dump in a particular month, so picking a date shouldn't be a problem
2. If you like. pick a month for now, you can pick the exact date later
3. Your DoTM outing can be any day or night of the week
4. It doesn't have to be local, we BMC folks LIKE to drive

There's really nothing to arranging one of these outings. Simply pick a date/time, provide some directions and we'll get the word out to everyone.

TRC's Roger Schroer has accepted BMC President Scott Langley's invitation to address the club at one of the 2008 monthly meetings. Roger is preparing a comprehensive audio-visual presentation on his current ride, Buckeye Bullet 2, the world's fastest H2-powered car.

Roger set the FIA H2 international land speed record of 103 MPH and the fastest H2 speed of 224 MPH at Bonneville earlier this year. He also holds the US and International land speed records for battery-powered cars and is the 60th all-time member of the prestigious Bonneville 300 MPH Club, setting the electric USLSR at 315 MPH.

We are honored that Roger is joining us and will give you as much advanced notice as we can of the meeting date.

Hello fellow BMC members,

For the past two years members of our club have attended the Mike Albert Valentine's Day tribute to Elvis at the Aladdin Shrine Temple. It has always proved to be an unbelievable evening. If you are not aware, Mike Albert is the premium Elvis impersonator in the country and it is as close to seeing the real Elvis as you will ever get.

This year's concert will be held on Friday, February 15^th and ticket prices are $28.00. I have tentatively reserved a block of 16 tickets for the club but will need to know how many will be going. If you are interested please send a check to: Jerry or Jane Nieman.

DIVERSE SCHEDULE ON-TAP FOR MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE IN 2008

DUBLIN, Ohio (November 27, 2007) – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will boast seven major events in 2008, featuring the finest in open-wheel, sports car, motorcycle, historic and grassroots racing at the Lexington, Ohio road course.

The 47^th season of racing officially kicks off June 20-22 with the EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank, featuring the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. After a year apart, the Daytona Prototypes and GT cars of the Rolex Series will once again face-off in a combined event Saturday evening. The three-day event will also showcase the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series and the top tuner cars will return for the 5^th Annual Triple Crown Tuner Challenge.

Historic automobiles from around the globe will converge on Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on June 27-29 as the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio celebrates fifty years of the Austin Healey Sprite, the event’s official marque.

The largest event on the schedule – the Acura Sports Car Challenge and The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by Westfield Insurance – is set for July 18-20 and will highlight the American Le Mans and IndyCar Series. This jam-packed weekend will also include support races from SCCA Pro Racing’s SPEED World Challenge presented by Trenton Forging and the Indy Pro Series, as it aims to be the largest motorsports event in the state of Ohio for the second year running.

The Mid-Ohio season will reach its midway point with two weekends of motorcycle mayhem. The AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days roars into town on July 25-27, bringing with it the history and grandeur of featured marque Triumph. The following weekend, the fast and furious of the two-wheeled variety roll in with the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire, one of the AMA Superbike Championship Series’ most popular stops.

Two grassroots racing events will conclude the 2008 schedule as the National Auto Sport Association comes to town September 12-14 for the NASA Championships presented by Toyo Tires, while the following weekend welcomes the AMA Road Race Grand Championships / Motocross Manufacturers Cup, September 19-21.

The musical "Menopause – The Musical" is coming to the Southern Theater January 22-27, 2008. Would any Miata Mama be interested in attending this show? It is described as The Hilarious Celebration of Women and The Change.

I have a call into the ticket office to see what kind of price we could get for a group of 15+. The regular ticket price is $47.50 but drops to $43.50 if purchased by January 6. Also the ad says that there is group pricing for groups of 15 and over.

If you will be at the auto cross trophy night tomorrow, I wanted to let you know that the exit ramp from I 270 south onto Main Street east bound is closed. You could take the west bound exit at Main Street, go west one block to the first stop light, turn right then turn around (there are a couple of parking lots just back from the corner) and go back east bound on
Main Street to get to the restaurant.

All the other entrance and exit ramps are open.

Hocking Hills Drive - THIS SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Yup, we're going to the do the Hocking Hills drive this Sunday afternoon (Oct 21st). The weather forecast is for sunny skies and 78*. The leaves may have another week or so to peak, but I figure great weather is a higher priority! Going on Sunday afternoon means you can watch football on Saturday, and we'll be driving during the more comfortable part of the day on Sunday (1pm - 6pm)!

The other thing to know is that you can easily come with us and do only part of the trip should you need to be back earlier than we've planned. There are any number of ways to escape the route and head home when you like. I'll be glad to help you with a route to do that if you like. If you can't make the 1pm start, you could still meet us in Circleville around 2pm, before we start the fun part of the drive.

Meanwhile, here's the plan!

Date: Sunday, Oct 21st
Time: 1pm (a short driver's meeting will start at 1pm sharp)
Where: We'll meet at the Bob Evans restaurant on Stringtown Rd at I-71 in Grove City

- We'll leave around 1pm
- Drive the route thru Hocking Hills (the route that I sent out a week or so ago)
- End up in Chillicothe at the Sumburger Drive-In about 4:30pm
- Be back in Columbus between 6:00 - 6:30pm

I'll provide copies of the route and a map. Please bring your FRS radio (ch.7) if you have one. There will be gas/food/restroom opportunities along the route. My plan is to break us up into small 3 car groups when we leave Circleville. Hopefully, that will allow us to better enjoy the driving and scenery without the "rubber banding" that happens in a large group. Everyone will have a copy of the route and a map so following each other shouldn't be an issue. There are a couple of points where we'll collect everyone and make sure all is well.

Schembechler shared his thoughts with HBO in an interview – the coach's last long-form interview before his death – conducted in Michigan Stadium on Nov. 16, 2006, two days prior to the most anticipated meeting in the rivalry's history. I've mentioned a few times that I've put together a neat drive thru the Hocking Hills and would like to do it as a drive with the club. Now, all we need are for the leaves to change and a nice day on a weekend! Hopefully, the two of those will come together soon. In case the weather doesn't cooperate, I'm sending the route out to everyone so you can take advantage of it anytime you like. With any luck, I'll be sending out a note in the next week or two with a date and a time, but if not, or if you want to do it on a different day, you have the route.

The route instructions are attached. Start to finish, with a stop for gas and lunch, is about a 5 hour trip. The route begins at the Bob Evans on Stringtown & I-71 in Grove City and ends up at Sumburger, an original 50's Drive-In restaurant in Chillicothe. The route uses side roads throughout Hocking Hills that you probably have not been on. Trust me, these are some seriously fun roads with some of the best scenic views you'll find. Let's hope the color is good! The scenery features ridge top views, hollows, trees arching over the roadway, deep woods and more. The route itself will keep you entertained with lots of curves, switchbacks, hills and crests. The best part is, these roads don't see much traffic, even on the weekend.

If you decide to go without me, let me know what you think of the route afterwards. I'd be interested in your feedback!

If you want to run this yourself and come at it from Lancaster instead if Circleville, just follow these steps:

- Take Rt33 South/East and the 33 bypass around Lancaster
- Turn Right onto Rt374
- Rt374 merges with Rt180, begin following Rt180
- Turn Left onto Rt56 in Laurelville
- Start looking for Step #12 in the route I published

If you don't want to go all the way to Chillicothe, you can ignore Step #28, stay on Rt56, turn left on Rt374 and head back to Lancaster.

Never a dull moment at the Salt Flats... As of yesterday the BB2 was the only team left, after one of the other record seekers had already set a record, and the other two had blown their engines while attempting to set their records.

With the BB2 as the lone survivor, it became clear the Wednesday would be the last day of the meet. Again, no pressure. On this subject, I take the liberty to quote the very nice message of our friend, alumnus and sponsor Ralph Rockow, who has evidently experienced similar situations... Thank you Ralph for everything you have done for us over the years!!

Sure you love life at the Salt Flats…………just like I loved those all night sessions baby sitting the Apollo LEM descent engine test firings with one delay after another!!!

Given the limited time available the Bullet set out to attempt the hydrogen fuel cell LSR. The attempt began around 1pm local time. In order to qualify for a record, the vehicle would have to complete two runs in opposite directions within 60 minutes. The BB2 started at the far end of the track, with a plan to refuel at the south end, where the pit area is located, and the restart in the outbound direction within one hour. The timed mile for the "flying mile" record is in the middle of the 11-mile course.

One more time, the BB2 had a strong start on both legs of the record runs, but had an automatic shut down once it reached full power, in spite of all the work done during the preceding 24 hours to rectify the hydrogen flow problems. Thus, on both runs the Bullet coasted through the flying mile without any power. Fortunately, coasting is a relative concept, and BB2 was able to average approximately 130 mph along the timed mile, resetting the fuel cell vehicle record in class 3 (unlimited weight) by nearly 50 mph. I will send images of the certificate and other details of the run as soon as I have them in digital form.

I want to make it clear that we shall investigate the history of FIA records, as I believe this to be the first time ever that a vehicle has actually set a FIA record with ZERO TRACTIVE POWER.

In summary, during the past two weeks the Bullet2 has recorded the fastest ever speed for a hydrogen fueled and fuel cell powered vehicle at around 224 mph, and has set the official FIA world record for Group XIV-class 3 (fuel cell engine, unlimited weight) at around 130 mph.

We are proud of the accomplishments of the OSU student team, and we look forward to reaching even higher goals next August. The team will be returning to Columbus late today.

P.S.: the last communication I had with the team was from the truck weighing station at the border of Utah with Nevada. Those who have been to Bonneville will know exactly where it is. Eeighing the vehicle is a required FIA procedure for certification, and the BB2 has to PROVE that it weighs more than 1000 kg, thus belonging to class 3. Now, those who have seen this monster know that it must weigh the better part of 2.5 tons, so you would think the weigh-in would not be needed. Alas, it was required and the truck scales were shorter than the wheelbase of the BB2, thus requiring that the trailer be weighed with and without the BB2 in it. That provided some humor, as well as a lot of work...

Yesterday the BB2 continued its preparation and attempted a run in the morning.
Once again, the vehicle responded well to the initial acceleration, pulling away very well under power, until it reached a speed of around 230 mph, then the power system shut down again. This time it was clear that the inverter was performing well, and it became apparent that the problem is a hydrogen leak that, appropriately, causes a shut down. We are very pleased about the safety systems in the vehicle!
This is a problem that the testing at TRC and the early run at the World Finals last week could not have detected, as it appears only at speeds above 200 mph (double what we can achieve at TRC) and at full power.
Yesterday afternoon the team opened the stacks and set on the painstaking task of checking all of the fittings in the H2 paths in the stacks. As of yesterday evening, the team was upbeat and working hard to isolate the leakage. We believe that this is the last unsolved problem, and if the repairs are completed successfully, BB2 might be ready for high speed runs later today. Two days left. No pressure.

The Bullet 2 has been preparing and testing. Yesterday afternoon the first run on the 11-mile course was completed. This was intended to be a test run to evaluate all the changes made in the fuel cell system and vehicle control software over the weekend. The fuel cell system performed as intended, but the inverter reached a limitation that caused the run to be terminated around 200 mph. When I received a phone update the team had just spoken with Tony Davis of Saminco, the sponsor who has provided the inverter used in both Bullet vehicles. I understand that the appropriate changes in the calibration have been implemented, and the vehicle will be ready for another test run this morning. If this run is successful, the next run may be a record attempt. I hope to have an update at the end of the day.

World Finals are over, but the adventure continues. Over the weekend the Bullet2 team has been able to make arrangements to stay at Bonneville through October 12th, together with a small number of other teams that will be attempting FIA sanctioned records. This extended stay is possible through the continued support of the OSU college of engineering, Ballard, Ford, and Cowen Truck Lines. We are grateful to all our sponsors, too numerous to mention here. Approximately half of the team returned to Columbus last night, and 7 veterans (all with Bullet1 experience) have remained on the Salt.

This is the first time that any Bullet team has had the opportunity to set FIA records. The attachment summarizes the existing FIA records. The Bullet 2 is eligible for records in the following categories:

Group VIII – electrical engine, class 3
Group XIV – fuel cell engine, class 3

The record that will be attempted is the flying mile, and in that category the Group VIII record stands at 245.524 (White Lightning, 1999), while the Group XIV record is 83.484 (Opel Zafira).

Yesterday, Sunday, the team set up its pits alongside the other teams at the south end of the Salt Flats (immediately north of I-80).
Time trials should start today, and the weather is expected to cooperate.

After a busy evening and morning devoted to upgrading control software, the team had the BB2 in the queue and ready to go around 10AM.
Unfortunately the queue never moved much as heavy winds and incoming rain forced the officials to close the track and end the meet.
World Finals is over, but there may be some further updates as the team is considering lengthening their stay by a few days to run again early next week.
